Gengetone artist Kevin Mburu Kinyanjui, widely known as Shalkido, tragically passed awayon 7 October 2025. He had been fighting for his life in the hospital following a serious road accident.
Hours before the young star died, doctors confirmed a devastating diagnosis: Shalkido had been pronounced brain dead.
Content creator 2Mbili, who knew Shalkido from his early days in comedy, visited the musician in the hospital. He later recounted the difficult final moments he witnessed at the bedside.

A Painful Farewell in the ICU
2Mbili went to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) at around 2 A.M to see Shalkido. He met with the family there.
2Mbili waited for approximately an hour. Before leaving, he entered the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and looked at Shalkido.
2Mbili described seeing a large amount of blood coming from Shalkido’s ears. He noted that the musician had nearly one hundred pipes attached to him.
“I went to the ICU and looked at Shalkido. There was a lot of blood coming out of the ears. He was connected to a lot of pipes; I can say around 100 pipes. And I just prayed to God to help him, but at the back of my mind also, I knew it was going to be hard, like for him to survive,” 2Mbili recounted.
Doctors had already informed the family about the dire situation. They stated clearly that Shalkido could not survive.

The physicians explained that the brain had failed. His kidneys had also failed. Shalkido had lost all five senses, meaning he had no sense of smell or touch.

The medical team offered options, noting that continuing life support would be expensive. 2Mbili left the hospital around 5:30 a.m.
He received the sad news that Shalkido had been lost less than an hour after departing.
Understanding the Irreversible Diagnosis
The tragic diagnosis of brain death marked an irreversible turning point. Brain death is both a legal and medical term for death. It results from permanent damage to the entire brain and brainstem.
The brainstem is vital because it manages critical functions like heartbeat regulation and breathing.
In brain death, there is a total and irreversible loss of all brain function. The injured person is unconscious and unable to breathe on their own.
Reports indicated that Shalkido suffered severe internal brain injuries. He had severe brain bleeding and swelling. Comedian Oga Obinna had previously shared the doctors’ findings.
The internal haemorrhaging was so widespread that it prevented surgical intervention, meaning the injury was inoperable.

The Road Safety Tragedy
The horrific accident took place in the early hours of Sunday, 5 October 2025. Shalkido was riding a motorcycle toward Nairobi.
He had performed at a venue in Thika before the crash. The collision occurred on the main highway along Thika Road.
2Mbili recalled speaking to Shalkido about safety before the accident. He specifically remembered telling him about the importance of putting on a helmet every time.

Shalkido’s death adds to national concerns about road safety. As of 10 August 2025, Kenya had recorded 2,933 road traffic fatalities since the beginning of the year.
A Call for Unity
2Mbili asked supporters to stand with and pray for Shalkido’s family. He urged the “sailor’s gang” to come together to hold the family close.
