Kenyan musician and businesswoman Esther Akoth, popularly known as Akothee, has publicly voiced her frustrations, claiming she is used for her influence and charitable work but is denied official recognition.
The self-proclaimed "President of single mothers" has taken to social media to highlight what she sees as a double standard, where her philanthropic efforts are embraced by officialswhile her controversial fashion choices are a constant source of criticism.
In a recent online post, Akothee shared a story about being nominated for a Presidential Award for her extensive charity work in Migori County. However, she was later told her name had been 'wiped off' the final list.

"Kenya will never Award me even for being the most naked woman, but tag me in all fundraisings, Vulnerable people in the society," she wrote.
The singer stated that a call from a chief in 2023 praised her as "one of the most celebrated Philanthropist from Migori County" and asked her to submit her profile for the Presidential Awards.

After hesitating, she eventually submitted her documents, only to discover her name was removed from the list of awardees. Akothee believes the decision was politically motivated.
She also mentioned her efforts in renovating an airstrip and landing a commercial plane in Migori County, yet she still missed the award.

“It didn’t pain me because I was invited as the Brand Ambassador for Homabay, but hey, so when they called me for Migori Edition I told them ‘Nope I am A brand I come at a cost of 2m for appearance’, that didn’t land well with so many and just like that I broke some glasses on some tables.”
Akothee’s post echoes her long-standing contention that she is judged for her public image and fashion rather than her contributions to society.
A History of Fashion Controversies
For years, Akothee has been at the centre of public debate over her dress code, particularly her preference for revealing outfits. This has led to online backlash and even physical altercations.
In one notable incident, she was temporarily denied access to Parliament in 2019 due to her attire, which she jokingly referred to as a mini skirt. Her defiant stance on the matter is consistent.

"I'm not paid to be anybody's role model," she once declared in response to critics.
Akothee has consistently maintained that she is a musician and businesswoman, and that parents should be the primary role models for their children.
