IEBC Launches Voter Registration Drive Targeting 6.3 Million New Voters

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has initiated a substantial drive to register millions of new voters.

The Commission is targeting 6.3 million new eligible voters through the resumption of its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

This push is being seen as a crucial preparatory step. It acts as a precursor to the forthcoming by-elections and the eventual 2027 General Election.

Focus on the Youth Vote

A significant portion of the new voters sought by the Commission are young people. The IEBC aims to enlist youth voters, often referred to as Gen Z.

70 percent of the 6.3 million new voters are expected to be young people.

Media reports have highlighted the Commission's specific focus on drawing Gen Z from the streets to the ballot box. The registration efforts were announced on September 29, 2025.

Announcement Made in Parliament

The details of the registration drive were confirmed by Commission Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon. He gave this assurance during his appearance before Parliament.

Mr Ethekon had been invited to appear before the Parliamentary Accounts Committee (PAC). The Butere Member of the National Assembly, Hon. Tindi Mwale, leads this committee.

The Chairperson’s appearance was specifically required to respond to the Auditor General’s report.

This report concerns the Account of the National Government for the Financial year which ended on 30th June 2023.

A Pledge of Collaboration

During his address, the Commission Chairperson assured the public that the IEBC is fully prepared and working diligently for the upcoming electoral events.

He emphasised that preparations for the by-elections are currently on course.

The leadership of the Commission also made a significant pledge regarding its future operations.

Mr Ethekon promised to maintain close collaboration with stakeholders and the leadership of both houses of Parliament.

He underlined the importance of transparency and cooperation in enhancing the country's electoral processes.

The IEBC aims to enhance the overall voter experience through these efforts. The commitment is to work with various parliamentary committees and other progressive Kenyans.

The successful registration of 6.3 million new voters will be key to the Commission’s mission ahead of 2027.
