Tanzanian gospel music legend Rose Muhando has detailed the precise moment her career translated into a massive financial success.
During a recent interview with podcaster Dr. King’ori, the veteran singer revealed that she earned her first five million Kenyan Shillings (Ksh 5 million) from her global hit, "Nibebe".
Early Career and Humble Beginnings
Muhando's journey into music was rooted purely in passion. She began her career loving the choir and had no initial expectation of financial gain from recording.

Her first studio effort was the album Mteule Uwe Macho. The album was recorded around 2004.
Muhando recalled that she recorded the songs and simply walked away, not understanding the commercial mechanics of the industry.

“I just went, recorded, and told him, ‘Thank you, I’m leaving.’ I didn't know anything else,” she recalled.
Despite the popularity of her music across East Africa, particularly in Kenya, much of the income was lost to widespread piracy.
The First Payout Shock
Her very first monetary reward, derived from her initial album, was modest. Muhando received roughly Ksh 20,000. This sum was equivalent to 100,000 Tanzanian Shillings at the time.

Muhando was so overwhelmed by possessing that much money that she travelled home in fear. She hid the cash in her clothes, convinced that everyone around her knew she was carrying money.
“When I received my first pay from my Indian distributor, I was confused. I had to hid it, I didn’t want anyone to know I had money. In the matatu, I was holding onto myself because in my mind, I was thinking everybody was seeing me with money,” Rose Muhando said.
A month after this initial payment, she received a significantly larger sum of about Ksh 700,000.
“I was like a crazy person, holding the sum in my hands, I was shaking, not believing the amount was mine. The Indians used to pay in cash, but later they helped me open a bank account.”
The 'Nibebe' Phenomenon
Muhando soon recorded the song "Nibebe," which quickly became a huge global hit. It was the success of this song that led to her receiving a major windfall.

Key Statistic
• Payout from "Nibebe": 5,000,000 Kenyan Shillings.
• This was equivalent to 100,000,000 Tanzanian Shillings.
She credits her Indian distributors for ensuring she received this payment.
"I was once paid five million Kenya shillings in one instance. The song was a hit all over".
Financial Milestones
Receiving the multi-million-shilling payment allowed Muhando to upgrade her lifestyle. Drawing from her humble background in a farming family, this money enabled major financial milestones.
The funds allowed her to purchase better cars, including a Prado. More importantly, she ensured her children were educated in good schools.

Despite the massive financial success, Muhando maintains that her biggest gain is the number of people who found salvation through her songs, noting that many people exploited her hard work for their own gain.
