The debate over marriage has intensified following comedian Chebet Ronoh’s viral remark, “Ndoa hubamba mafala” (loosely translated as “Marriage only excites fools”).
The comment sparked heated discussions online, drawing in preacher and popular TikToker Mchungaji Mathayo, who firmly rejected the claim and instead presented a compelling case for marriage as a divine institution.
In a widely shared TikTok video, Mathayo emphasized that marriage is not a naive trap, but a sacred blessing from God.
He argued that marriage goes far beyond societal tradition, offering spiritual and practical benefits designed by God. To back up his point, he outlined six biblical reasons why marriage matters.
According to Mathayo, marriage:
Brings Joy – by loving your spouse as God commands.

Supports Healthy Development of Children – ensuring stability for the next generation.
Teaches Selflessness – through sacrificial love between husband and wife.
Safeguards Morality – by reducing the risk of sexual immorality.
Reflects God’s Love – as a picture of Christ’s relationship with the Church.
What Netizens Had to Say
The video has sparked mixed reactions online, particularly among younger Kenyans who are increasingly skeptical of marriage.
While some applauded the preacher’s biblical perspective, others weren’t convinced.
Instagram user @wendykenda.she wrote: “Hujaniconvince bado” (You haven’t convinced me yet).

Another, @thee._spice, observed: “Enyewe kwa kina ndoa ni kungumu” (Indeed, marriage is hard).
Adding humor, @i.t.s_arnold quipped: “Huyo shawty aseme tu amekosa bwana tutampea Kang’ethe ?.”
While some praised the biblical defense of marriage, many young Kenyans expressed skepticism, pointing out the realities of failed marriages and toxic relationships.
Mathayo ended his sermon with a direct challenge: “Bado unaamini marriage hubamba mafala?” For him, the message is clear marriage is not for fools, but for those ready to embrace a divine covenant rooted in joy, love, and blessing.
