Nakuru: Two Girls Shamed by Female Teacher for not Wearing Undergarments

Two sisters in Nakuru County have missed a week of school after they were allegedly ridiculed by a teacher for not wearing undergarments.

According to a report by NTV Kenya, the incident occurred at Kenana Primary School in Njoro sub-county.

The female teacher allegedly mocked the girls in front of the staff for not wearing undergarments.

The two minors now report severe feelings of shame and distress. They are unable to face their fellow learners and teachers.

The Day of Distress

The ordeal began last Tuesday when the two sisters, aged 11 and 16 years old, left home for school. The older sibling, a Grade 9 student, was initially sent back home regarding school fees.

Meanwhile, the younger sister, a Grade 4 student, was scolded. This was because she was wearing trousers inside her school uniform.

“The teacher instructed me to go to the washrooms and remove the trousers. She then caned me and asked me to follow her to the staffroom. On reaching there, she checked me and shamed me in front of other male teachers, saying, ‘this one has no undergarments’,” the young girl narrated.

When the 16-year-old sister returned to school, she sought out her teacher. She wished to speak about the pending fees. Instead, the same teacher who had mocked her younger sister called her aside.

“She asked me also, ‘Are you wearing one or you are like your younger sister, let’s confirm’…and then you can imagine all the teachers in the staffroom laughed at me. How do you think I felt? It was very painful,” the 16-year-old said.

The siblings believe the female teacher should have handled the issue more privately. They claim they were subjected to harassment.

Week-Long Absence and Emotional Toll

The emotional toll of the incident has been significant. The girls have been weighed down by feelings of distress. They have since been unable to attend classes for a full week.

The upcoming exams, scheduled for next month, are now uncertain for the Grade 4 and Grade 9 students. Their family faces financial constraints. These costs make transferring the girls to another school unaffordable.

Calls for Action

The residents of the area have condemned the incident strongly. They are demanding disciplinary action against the teachers involved.

According to the report, the Njoro sub-county director of education has offered official advice. He suggested the family should report the matter to the ministry’s office. This is necessary for further direction on the issue.
