Global snakebite burden: The latest statistics/HILLARY BETT

Snakebites affect up to 5.4 million people worldwide every year.

Between 1.8 and 2.7 million of these cases result in envenoming.

The World Health Organization estimates that snakebites cause between 81,000 and 138,000 deaths annually.

Most cases occur in rural areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Survivors often suffer long-term complications such as amputations or permanent disability.
