Kenyan singer Willy Paul has come out strongly to dismiss claims circulating online that he sold his music catalogue for KSh 15 million and used the proceeds to purchase a luxury Range Rover.

The rumours, which gained traction on social media, painted a picture of an artist cashing out on his years of work in exchange for flashy material possessions.

However, the controversial star insists that the claims are baseless and misleading.

Addressing the Claims

Taking to his official Instagram account, Willy Paul made it clear that he has never sold his catalogue and has no plans of ever doing so.

The artist emphasised the value of his musical journey, pointing out that selling his intellectual property is out of the question.

In a direct response to the rumours, Willy Paul posted:

“I’ve never sold my catalogue and I will never. Kesho new song x Patelo x Diana Dee 10am. I’ve been tooooo silent mpaka watu wamenizoea vibaya.”

By including this strong denial, the singer not only shut down the speculation but also seized the moment to promote his upcoming collaboration with artists Patelo and Diana Dee.

Importance of a Music Catalogue

A music catalogue represents an artist’s body of work—songs, albums, and compositions—that continue to generate royalties over time.

In the global music industry, some musicians choose to sell their catalogues to investors or record companies for large sums, often as a retirement plan.

However, Willy Paul insists he will never go down this route, underscoring his belief in the long-term value of his art.

Using Controversy for Promotion

Willy Paul is no stranger to controversy and has often been accused of using public drama to boost attention around his music.

In this case, he quickly flipped the narrative from rumours of financial dealings to excitement about his upcoming release.

This strategy reflects his understanding of the entertainment industry, where visibility and buzz can be just as valuable as the music itself.

Fan Reactions

The denial sparked mixed reactions among fans. Supporters applauded him for standing firm on the value of his catalogue, noting that many international artists have regretted selling their music rights.

Others, however, accused him of fuelling unnecessary drama, pointing out that the denial coincided conveniently with the announcement of his new track.

Regardless of the scepticism, the conversation has kept Willy Paul’s name trending—something he has mastered throughout his career.
