Kericho County Assembly MCAs have now shifted their guns to Governor Eric Mutai’s Cabinet, months after the county boss survived an impeachment attempt.
A notice of motion seeking the removal of six CECs has been filed with the ward representatives over claims of abuse of office, gross misconduct, and violation of the Constitution.
The targeted officials include Joseph Korir (Lands), Magerer Langat (Agriculture), Brenda Bii (Roads and Public Works), and Philemon Kurgat (Water), David Ekwam (Health) and Joseph Rop (Finance).
While filing the notices, the members confirmed that they had met the threshold, including collecting the required signatures to back the motion, paving the way for a full debate in the house.
A member of the County Assembly, supported by at least one-third of all the members, may propose a motion requiring the governor to dismiss a CEC.
“I beg, with the support of members of the Kericho county assembly whose names and signatures are annexed, to move a motion for the removal from office the county executive member for lands, housing and physical planning Joseph Korir…,” Chaik ward MCA Mathew Korir said, while filing the notice.
The assembly will now fix a date for the debate.
The move is the latest twist in Kericho’s turbulent county politics.
Last December, Mutai sacked six CECs and retained only three in a surprise reshuffle meant to appease residents after he narrowly survived his second impeachment attempt in the Senate.
At the time, he framed the decision as a reset for his administration.
“Pursuant to paragraph 23 of the Terms and Service of the County Executive together with section 40 (1) of the County Government Act No. 17 of 2012, I have given notice of termination of contract to the following County Executive Committee members,” the governor stated in his December communication.
The shake-up was widely seen as an effort to restore confidence in his leadership after a bitter standoff with MCAs.
Mutai’s ouster bid was endorsed by the Kericho County Assembly but flopped in the Senate due to a technicality.
With the latest impeachment motion, political observers say MCAs are now piling indirect pressure on Mutai by targeting his close allies.
The majority of the CECs listed in the motion were part of the new team Mutai appointed following the December purge.
If successful, the impeachment would deal another blow to Mutai’s efforts to steady his administration and deliver on his promises to the people of Kericho.
