US President Donald Trump has vocally expressed his hope that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, will face the death penalty.
Kirk, a prominent figure and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, during an event at Utah Valley University.
Robinson was apprehended after a rapid manhunt.

President's Strong Stance
Speaking in an interview on Fox News, President Trump made his position clear regarding the suspect’s punishment.
"I hope he gets the death penalty," Mr Trump stated. He described Kirk as "the finest person and a truly Great American Patriot".
Trump also highlighted Kirk's significant impact, noting he "had a big impact on the election" by engaging many young voters.
Mr Trump plans to attend Kirk’s funeral. He also announced that he will posthumously award Charlie Kirk the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour.

The tragic incident occurred at Utah Valley University, which is the state's largest public university.
The single fatal shot is believed to have been fired from the roof of the Losee Center building on campus. Approximately 3,000 people attended the event.

Manhunt and Arrest
Following the shooting, law enforcement initiated an intensive investigation. They released images and later video of a "person of interest" seen climbing from a roof.
The FBI, along with local officials, received a substantial number of tips, totalling over 7,000, and later more than 11,000 leads, described as the largest number since the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
Tyler Robinson was taken into custody late on Thursday, September 11, 2025. His arrest followed his father's intervention, who confronted him after seeing the released photos and urged him to surrender.
Suspect's Background and Evidence
Robinson, a 22-year-old residing in Southern Utah, had no prior criminal history. He was a third-year electrical apprenticeship student at Dixie Technical College.

His family noted that he had become "more political" in recent years. Authorities recovered the suspected murder weapon, a Mauser Model 98, .30-06 calibre bolt action rifle, from a wooded area where the shooter fled.

"The cries of this widow will echo around the world like a battle cry." - Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s widow.
Legal Proceedings Ahead
Robinson has been booked on charges including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice for moving and hiding the gun, and felony discharge of a firearm causing bodily injury.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox previously confirmed the state's intention to seek the death penalty in this case.
Utah's primary method of execution is lethal injection, with a firing squad as an alternative should the necessary drugs be unavailable.
