Three family members killed in Nairobi Mathare fire buried in Kitui

A Kitui village grieved on Saturday during the tearful send-off of three family members who died in a house fire in Nairobi’s Mathare slum.

Mutanda village in Mwingi North constituency turned out for the funeral of 31-year-old Newton Muthui and his two young children, Daniel and Gabriel.

The event was attended by Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua and MP Paul Nzengu, who led residents in mourning.

The trio lost their lives in a fire at their house on August 14 in the Jangwani area of Mathare. The father died at KNH the following day.

“Do not attribute this disaster to any other cause. No. It was the will of God,” Senator Wambua told mourners.

“We should take it as such and rest our departed members in peace. As we mourn, we should be hopeful,” the senator said.

Wambua asked leaders to help their constituents, especially when they are hit by calamities, as was the Mutanda family.

“People really need the support of their leaders at times like this. If nothing else, just console and stand with them. It is important,” Wambua said.

He said the death of the three was not only a big blow to the family but also hit him hard. He thanked Senate colleagues for supporting the family.

Wambua cited Senators Beatrice Ogolla, Anita Kibwana, Mohammed Faki, Agnes Kavindu, Veronicah Maina and Ledama Olekina.
