Learning at St George’s Girls Secondary School in Nairobi has been brought to a sudden halt after students staged protests over the alleged assault of a student by one of the teachers.
The unrest, which broke out on Monday, prompted the school’s administration to announce an indefinite closure. Parents have since been asked to pick up their children as investigations continue.
Teacher Arrested and School Responds
According to officials at the institution, the teacher at the center of the allegations has already been arrested.
Police confirmed the detention, saying the suspect will be processed and appropriate charges filed. The incident reportedly occurred late last week, sparking anger among students who demanded accountability.

In a statement, the school board said the safety of students remains its top priority.
“We do not condone any form of assault within our institution. The concerned teacher has been arrested and is in police custody. We have requested parents and guardians to collect their daughters as we work with authorities to restore calm and ensure justice is served,” the statement read in part.

Public and Parent Outcry
Parents arriving at the school expressed shock and concern over the incident.
Some accused the administration of downplaying earlier complaints, while others called for stricter vetting of teachers.
“This is unacceptable. Our children come here to learn, not to live in fear. We demand thorough investigations and firm action,” said one parent outside the school.
The closure has sparked wider conversations on the safety of learners in schools across the country, with calls for the Ministry of Education to institute stronger safeguards against abuse in institutions.
Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and urged students, parents, and teachers to cooperate.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education is expected to release a statement on the matter in the coming days.
