Residents of Ngere village, Ndhiwa Sub County were left in shock, after a decomposing body of an unidentified woman was discovered in a shallow grave.
The bizarre discovery was made after a group of learners accidentally stumbled on the decomposing remains, before the police sought court orders to unearth source of the stench emanating from a shallow grave.
Ndhiwa Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Lucy Ndemo said a group of learners stumbled upon the grave and raised alarm after preliminary observation at the scene of the incident, indicated that a human body was covered using maize husks.
She said the body had decomposed to a level that it could not be easily identified, but there were indications of belonging to a female, whose age was yet to be conclusively verified.
“Even the villagers at the scene could not offer any clue on the body’s identity, ” Ndemo said.
The DCC expressed fears that the deceased might have been murdered elsewhere, before the body was moved to the scene.
She appealed to members of the public, whose relatives were missing to report to Ndhiwa police station and liaise with officers to try and identify the deceased.
The body was taken to Homa Bay County referral hospital mortuary for postmortem.
“A DNA test may be required to establish identity. It has decomposed beyond recognition,” the DCC added.
