Celebrated former police officer turned activist Cop Shakur has publicly revealed the reasons behind his decision to leave the "Fight Brutality and Impunity" (FBI) movement.
His departure, announced just weeks after he had joined the group, has sent shockwaves through the social justice community in Kenya.
Shakur made his announcement via a statement shared on his social media platforms. He clarified that his decision was not due to a change of heart about the cause.

Instead, it stemmed from a fundamental disagreement over the group's leadership and how it operates.
“After much reflection, I have decided to step away from the Fighting Brutality and Impunity movement. Leaving the FBI movement is not a rejection of its mission, but a choice of a new direction aligned with my principles,” Shakur tweeted on August 26, 2025.

He disclosed that he had already communicated his decision to leave to Osoi and police officer Hiram Kimathi, while extending his well wishes to the movement as it continues to pursue its objectives.
“I have communicated with my fellow members Patrick Osoi and Hiram Kimathi about this decision. I remain committed to justice and peaceful reform, and I wish the movement well as it continues its work for a fairer society,” he added.

Inside the FBI Movement
The FBI movement emerged as a powerful voice against police violence and state impunity in Kenya.
It brought together a diverse group of activists, human rights defenders, and concerned citizens. The movement gained significant traction, especially among the youth, as it spoke out against a long history of police brutality in the country.
According to online sources, the FBI movement was founded by Patrick Osoi. Other prominent members of the group include Hiram Kimathi.
The movement has been vocal in demanding justice for victims of police violence, including those who have been killed or disappeared.

Their work often involves organising protests, holding public forums, and providing legal support to victims.

The movement has had its own run-ins with the law. In recent months, some of its members, including founder Patrick Osoi, have been arrested and charged with various offences.
These arrests have often been seen by supporters as a way of silencing dissent and disrupting the movement's work.
The Real Reason Behind the Split
Shakur's reason for leaving the FBI movement was not due to intimidation by the government of the day.
"I never left the FBI Movement because of intimidation by the government or because I was bought. No amount of intimidation can stop me from opposing Ruto, and I will never be on his side,” Shakur tweeted on August 29.
A Future of Independent Activism
Shakur's departure is a significant blow to the FBI movement. However, it is not the end of his work. He has made it clear that he will continue his activism independently.
