Hair loss is a widespread concern affecting individuals globally, irrespective of gender. It can significantly impact self-esteem, confidence, and overall quality of life.

Fortunately, hair transplant surgery offers a popular and effective solution to restore hair growth and boost self-image. Kenya has emerged as a notable destination for this procedure, with a number of its celebrities embracing it.

The hair transplant industry in Kenya is steadily expanding, with a growing number of clinics in major cities like Nairobi offering restoration services to meet increasing demand.

What is Hair Transplant Surgery?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that involves moving hair from a donor area, typically located at the back or sides of the head, to areas of the scalp experiencing balding or thinning.

The key principle is that these transplanted hair follicles continue to grow in their new location, resulting in a fuller and more natural-looking head of hair.

The procedure is often referred to as "hair restoration" as well.

The process begins with the patient receiving a local anaesthetic. According to Avane Clinic, there are two primary methods for hair transplantation:

• Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), also known as the strip method: This involves taking strips of skin, complete with growing hairs, from the back and sides of the head. These strips are then grafted into tiny incisions made in the scalp's balding areas.

• Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): This method typically requires the entire head to be shaved. Individual hair follicles are removed one by one, sometimes with the aid of robots, and then transplanted into the areas with thinning hair or baldness. FUE is generally more expensive than FUT due to the increased time and skill required.

After the procedure, new hair growth usually becomes visible within six months, with the full effects of the hair transplant apparent between 12 to 18 months.

Number of Grafts Needed: The extent of hair loss directly influences the number of grafts required. More grafts translate to a higher procedure cost.

Type of Procedure: FUE, requiring more time and skill, is typically more expensive than FUT.
