When legendary saxophonist Kenny G announced his Nairobi concert, the internet had questions. Comments flew around like: "Who is this for?" and "I'm eager to have a new experience of what saxophone music is like, being played by a maestro"
Known for his soothing, romantic melodies, Kenny G represents a genre that's a world away from the thumping basslines and raw lyrics of Kenya’s Gengetone. This stark contrast raises a bigger question: what kind of concert experience do Kenyans really want today?
Gen Z Says "Vibe ni Gengetone"
For many urban youth, concerts are all about high energy, chaos, and songs you can shout along to at 2 a.m. From artists like Ethic and Mejja to Buruklyn Boyz, Gengetone has mastered the art of turning everyday life into a party anthem.
"I’d rather be at a Gengetone rave first where I can mosh and lose my voice then cool off at the saxophone event," says Marvin, a university student. "Kenny G is an experience to have on those days you just want to be cool and demure."
But Don’t Count Kenny G Out
As Nairobi’s older, more refined crowd quickly buys tickets to Kenny G’s show, a different mood emerges. It's one of nostalgia, calm, and sophistication.

“I grew up listening to Kenny G in my father’s car,” says Esther, 35. “It’s not about jumping up and down. It’s about being moved. It's about art.”
Another fan on X (formerly Twitter) put it this way:
"Kenny G makes it sensational and is consoling. It’s music for the soul."
Fans of jazz and instrumental music argue that this is the kind of variety Kenya needs—a welcome break from concerts that feel more like nightclubs.
A Cultural Clash or Co-existence?
The Kenny G vs. Gengetone debate speaks volumes about Kenya’s evolving music tastes and generational identities. One side values tradition and musical skill, while the other thrives on modern, energetic vibes.

But maybe the future isn't about choosing a side.
“Imagine a concert that opens with Kenny G and closes with Mbuzi Gang,” laughs Mutua*. “Now that’s what I call a vibe shift!”
Perhaps the future of Kenyan music events lies in embracing both worlds, methinks.
