The Harambee Stars, Kenya’s national football team, received a significant cash reward following their historic 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the opening game of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Sunday.
The government has confirmed the disbursement of Ksh42 million, a pledge made by President William Ruto to motivate the team.
The Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, was filled with fans who watched a thrilling match.
A single goal from midfielder Austin Odhiambo in the first half secured the win for the home team. The victory marked Kenya's first-ever win in the CHAN finals, a momentous occasion for the team and the country.

The Payout Breakdown
State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed confirmed the distribution of the funds. A total of Ksh 42 million was allocated to the team.
The money was divided among the 27 players and 15 members of the technical staff.

Each player received Ksh1 million for the win. The members of the technical bench also received a similar amount.
This was in fulfillment of President Ruto's promise to the team. The president had previously pledged Ksh1 million per player for every game won during the tournament.
"The president had pledged a million shillings per player for a win. He has since released Sh42 million for the 27 players and 15 members of the technical bench."
More Than a Single Win
The Ksh42 million reward is part of a larger, long-term promise from President Ruto. The President had earlier announced a massive Ksh600 million payout for the Harambee Stars if they were to reach the CHAN final. This promise was made to the team during their pre-tournament training.

The announcement was met with mixed reactions at the time. Many fans saw it as a powerful morale boost for the team.
Others, however, raised concerns about the sustainability of such large rewards. They pointed to the ongoing struggles of local clubs and stadium infrastructure.
The Bigger Picture: Sports and National Pride
The disbursement of the funds highlights a growing trend in African football. Leaders are increasingly using financial incentives to motivate national teams.
For Kenya, the win against DR Congo was more than just a sporting victory. It was a moment of national pride, uniting fans from different political and social backgrounds.
The team’s performance and the president's swift reward have set a positive tone for the rest of the tournament. The Harambee Stars will be hoping to continue their winning ways and secure more rewards in their upcoming matches.
