As the country celebrates the historic performance of Harambee Stars in their opening match and looks forward to their continued success, the government’s recent pledge of Sh600 million to support the national football team has sparked both admiration and debate.
Among those weighing in is Lucy Jeffrey, a Canadian-based Kenyan politician with aspirations to represent Westlands Constituency in the National Assembly.
In a thoughtful message shared on her social platforms, Lucy expressed pride in President William Samoei Ruto’s commitment to Kenyan sports, applauding his gesture of support for the national team.
“I’m so happy to see our President William Samoei Ruto supporting the Harambee Stars and encouraging them to victory. It’s inspiring to see national leadership backing our teams, sports truly unite us,” she stated.
However, Lucy also used the moment to raise broader concerns about national priorities and the plight of ordinary citizens.
She questioned whether such a massive allocation, Sh600 million, could be distributed more meaningfully, suggesting that even Sh1 million per player would be a significant and motivational reward without losing sight of the country's pressing social needs.
“At this very moment, millions of Kenyans are struggling,” she wrote.
“I have personally seen children without access to food, clothing, or proper shelter. People with disabilities who can’t afford basic assistive devices like wheelchairs. Youths are unemployed and hopeless. Mothers choosing between food and medicine for their children.”
Lucy Jeffrey emphasised that her concern is not a political attack but a plea for reflection and national dialogue.
“If the government has this kind of money to give away, I respectfully plead with the President to consider spreading more of it across to those who are hurting the most. This isn’t about politics or negativity, it’s about priorities,” she said.
She went on to urge Kenyans that even as they celebrate national achievements, they should not be done at the expense of those silently suffering.
