Kenya's national conversation around alcohol reform is heating up, with public figures now weighing in on the proposed policy changes from the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA).

Media personality Lydia K. M. recently sparked widespread discussion after sharing her thoughts on NACADA's recommendations.

"Yesterday I put up a poll on my stories to ask if you are for or against the policy recommendations from NACADA. And it is clear we are divided on this," she stated.

"Somebody actually said these recommendations are not going to deal with the root cause of alcohol abuse—they are just basically putting a band-aid on a surgical wound."

  • Raising the Legal Drinking Age: From 18 to 21 years.

  • Advertising Bans: Prohibiting alcohol advertisements during public events and "watershed" hours (typically when childrenare likely to be watching).

  • Outlawing Promotions: Banning popular offers like happy hour and buy-one-get-one-free deals.

  • Limiting Alcohol Outlets: Restricting where alcohol can be sold, particularly near schools and places of worship. This also includes proposals to ban online sales and home deliveries of alcohol.
