Sources said he was spotted at the bustling OTC stage as late as 10 pm, while another one commented online that he saw him at the same location at around 5 pm, raising questions about the exact timeline of events leading up to the accident.

His first name was Kevin, and he was popularly known as Mavela by his peers, who also knew him as the ‘Canadian Flag Bear’ and ‘Canadian Boy’ due to his association with the Opposite matatu.

Opposite, the matatu, won the "Kenya One" title in 2022 and 2023 according to Matatu Matwana Culture.

The matatu is known for plying the Umoja route under the Umoinner Sacco. The "Kenya One" award is given to the best 33-seater public service vehicle (PSV) in the country.

Reports circulating on social media indicate that Mavela died after being involved in an accident where he was "run over by a matatu around the Umoja Stage."

The news of his death quickly spread, with various social media pages sharing condolences and expressing shock over the loss.

What amplified the impact of Mavela's death was its uncanny coincidence with the launch of the new 'MOOD' matatu.

Posts from various accounts, including "Manyanga Cinematographers" and "Steve Mugambi," highlighted this startling timing.

"From Happy launching of mood to condolences being sent to Umoiner," read one post from Manyanga Cinematographers, reflecting the abrupt shift from celebration to sorrow. Steve Mugambi's post on July 19, 2025, specifically questioned, "Mavela dies the same day Mood is been launched?????? Something is not adding up what type of mood .........".
