A 70-year-old granny was killed by bees as she was going to Ratanga market in Kwabwai ward in Ndhiwa.

Anastasia Oyugi died after being stung by a swarm of bees.

Central Kwabwai location chief George Olang’o said the bees were provoked by a tractor that was murraming a road near the market.

The bees live in an empty battery box which was being used to supply energy for a solar light on a street in the market.

“The tractor produced smoke that provoked the bees before they flew and stung her. She collapsed and died as some residents rushed her to a nearby health facility,” Olang’o said.

Speaking after the incident on Wednesday, Olang’o called on residents to remain cautious as they operate in the market.

The administrator said they are working with Homa Bay county government officials to remove the pole from the place to avoid causing more harm to residents.

He said residents tried their best to rescue the granny but she was already overwhelmed.

The woman was unable to escape as the others who were nearby.

“Our people must remain vigilant when they operate in the market to avoid more harm from the bees. We are looking for ways of addressing the issues with market officers,” he said.

Ndhiwa subcounty police commander John Losia asked residents to avoid passing near the area.

“Let residents remain cautious when using the road. People should also not apply lotions with smell that attract bees,” Losia said.
