In a candid and surprisingly deep conversation, popular content creator Oga Obinna found himself navigating a sensitive topic when his daughter, Ada, posed a direct question that many parents might find challenging: “Dad, why are people gay?”.
This pivotal moment, captured for their YouTube channel, ‘The Obinnaz’, provided a unique glimpse into Obinna’s approach to discussing sexual orientation with his children, blending personal views, religious beliefs, and a strong call for respect.

Before diving into the complexities, Obinna first sought to clarify the basic understanding, asking Ada,“First of all, what’s gay? Do you know what gay means?”. Ada promptly responded, defining ‘men dating men,’ and then, when prompted, clarified that lesbian refers to ‘girls dating girls’.
Obinna’s response was a blend of scientific acknowledgment, religious perspective, and a strong emphasis on personal boundaries and respect. He began by echoing a statement, likely from an AI, that“sexual orientation is a complex and not fully understood phenomenon”.
He stressed the importance of approaching the topic with “respect and understanding for all individuals regardless of their sexual orientation”.
However, Obinna then layered this scientific outlook with his personal and religious beliefs. He highlighted the Christian perspective on creation.
“When God created Adam, God created Adam, not Adam, Steve. ... when God created man, the idea was not for a man to marry another man, the idea behind a man and a woman was for procreation. So the male seed and the female seed to procreation population, that was the idea behind when God created man and woman."

Despite this, he acknowledged that love is a general term and that human beings started evolving and changing. Crucially, Obinna asserted that it is not good to judge them, even mentioning that he has a couple of friends who are gay and encouraging a “do your thing” attitude.
He suggested that trying to “understand why people are gay” might be futile, as “you might fail to understand” and “the more you try to know, the more you don’t know about it”.
Throughout the discussion, Obinna maintained clear personal boundaries for his children. He stated his intention to “raise girls and boys” as they were born, declaring,“You’re born as a girl, you live as a girl. You’re born as a boy, you live as a boy”.
He even asserted that if anything contrary to this were taught in his children’s school, he would remove them from that school immediately.
