After their high-profile exit from Kiss100 FM’s Breakfast Show in early 2023, fans have long speculated why Michelle Kamene and Oga Obinna never managed to replicate their on-air chemistry in the digital space.

The duo were a favourite morning pair, winning listeners with their lively banter and seamless teamwork. Yet, despite this success, their collaboration online—through YouTube and social media content—never quite took off.

Obinna has now opened up about the reasons behind their professional split, attributing it to differing creative visions and Kamene’s discomfort with the harsh scrutiny of online audiences.

Obinna, a comedian and emerging digital content creator, had been keen on transitioning Kamene into the world of online content, even persuading her to give it a chance despite her initial hesitation.

Their working relationship was strong enough that they even adopted a matching “dress like a king” style, symbolising their close creative bond.

“She’s talented. She’s lovely. She’s lovable. Throughout my years on radio, she is someone I genuinely enjoyed working with,” Obinna said of Kamene during an interview with reporters at his sold-out comedy special.

Before their departure from Kiss100 FM in February 2023, they had experimented with digital content through shows like The Request Show and the Kamene and Obinna Show, which served as trial platforms for their online presence.

Following their radio exit, Obinna was eager to continue their partnership digitally. He came up with a unique concept for what he envisioned as their first online episode—a culturally rooted idea he believed would resonate well with audiences.

However, when the episode went live, Kamene was met with intense trolling and criticism online, which she found overwhelming.

Obinna recalled, “That was like our first episode, and when it went online, guys trolled her and she got very stressed.”

Kamene’s response was immediate and firm: “I’m not doing this anymore,” she declared, despite the content already gaining traction and Obinna having invested financially.

Obinna tried to explain that the episode was intended as a joke, but she took offence and refused to engage further. Undeterred, Obinna proceeded to post the other recorded episodes.

After this incident, Kamene made it clear she had no interest in continuing the collaboration. Obinna revealed that he even encouraged her and her husband to pursue digital content creation independently if they wished, a fact he says is backed up by text messages between them.

In addition, Obinna encouraged Kamene to explore MCing—a path she initially resisted but eventually embraced after an event organised by her manager, Charity.

“She focused more on club gigs and other things, and gradually, we lost contact. I wouldn’t say there is any animosity or beef, but what I was trying to do, she didn’t see sense in,” Obinna explained.

Reflecting on his experiences, Obinna admitted his biggest mistake was overtrusting people, especially female colleagues, and he has since learned to expect disappointments.

He is clear that Kamene knows the full story of what happened between them.

Kamene quietly married DJ Bonez in April 2023, shortly before fans started noticing a rift between her and Obinna.

Meanwhile, Oga Obinna has reinvented himself, applying similar digital strategies alongside new collaborators such as Dem wa Facebook and Kartelo.
