A shocking and heartbreaking incident was witnessed at a funeral in Budalangi area of Busia County when a man fainted and fell into the grave of the deceased.
The man – a dedicated choir member who was the lead drummer during the funeral approached the grave to witness the deceased’s final journey as his casket was being lowered into the grave.
However, in an unexpected situation, the man fainted and fell into the grave of the deceased and after being rescued, it was discovered that he had also died.
The incident brought the sad ceremony to a shocking standstill as mourners were stranded between rushing to save his life and concluding the departed’s ceremony.
The man is said to be the son of the presiding pastor in the same burial ceremony.
He was rushed to Port Victoria Sub-County Referral Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.
While church members present described his death as part of God’s timing, some local Bunyala elders attributed the death to cultural retribution.

According to the elders, the drummer’s sudden and untimely collapse and death might have been a spiritual punishment for what they alleged he maybe was having a secret affair with the deceased’s wife, now the widow.
“In our Luhya traditions, someone who had an affair with the deceased’s spouse should never attend their burial,” one elder pointed out, adding, “If they do, they risk collapsing and dying on the spot. This is a clear case of cultural justice.”
The elders further stated that the man should have consulted them for traditional cleansing if he had concerns about attending the funeral. They claimed herbal remedies exist to protect individuals from such occurrences.
However, the confusion did not stop the funeral of the deceased, as the funeral procession continued as planned, albeit after a temporary delay, with the man being taken to the morgue, his body awaiting an autopsy before the cause of his mysterious death was determined.
