American singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, popularly known as J.Lo, is facing a lawsuit for posting photographs of herself at a Hollywood event without permission, according to USA Today.

The entertainment icon reportedly shared images on social media showing her arrival at the Amazon MGM Studios and Vanity Fair party held in Los Angeles on the eve of this year’s Golden Globe Awards in January.

Photographer Edwin Blanco and the paparazzi agency Backgrid have filed a copyright infringement suit, seeking damages of up to $150,000 (approx. Sh19.3 million) per photo, BBC reports.

According to the plaintiffs, the photos were used “to promote Ms. Lopez’s public appearances, boost user engagement, increase shareability, and lend credibility to her branded content.” The images show Lopez dressed in a white gown and faux fur coat outside the Chateau Marmont, where the event took place.

She posted the photos on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) with the caption “GG Weekend Glamour,” prompting widespread sharing across fan pages and fashion-focused accounts.

“Ms. Lopez’s unauthorized use of the images is commercial in nature, intended for the purpose of self-promotion,” the lawsuit states, citing examples such as her highlighting the designer of her outfit and jewellery—acts the plaintiffs say were meant to elevate her brand partnerships.

By law, the subject of a photograph does not own the rights to it. Copyright typically belongs to the photographer or agency that captured the image, and they have the legal authority to determine how the photo is used and to set licensing fees.

Court documents claim that Backgrid and Mr. Blanco reached out to Lopez’s representatives and negotiated terms for use of the photos, but she has allegedly not signed the agreement or issued payment.

This is not the first time Lopez has faced such legal issues. She was previously sued in 2019 and again in 2020 for sharing images taken by licensed photographers without proper authorization.

Other celebrities, including Dua Lipa, Gigi Hadid, and Khloe Kardashian, have also faced similar lawsuits for posting paparazzi images without securing rights.
