Donald Kipkorir, a prominent city lawyer, recounted a life-threatening incident that completely changed his perspective about life and the wealth that people strive to amass.

Through his X page, Kipkorir explained that in 2020, when the world was amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he was among the Kenyans affected by the virus.

He was hospitalized for several days in a solitary room, isolated and not allowed to interact with people for fear of infecting them with COVID-19.

While in his bed at the Agha Khan University Hospital, Kipkorir found himself reflecting and having long reflections on the importance and meaning of money and possessions in life, as at that time, Covid-19 had no cure, so even those with money could not treat it by buying medicine.

“For the entire November 2020, I was admitted to solitary existence at Aga Khan University Hospital because of COVID-19. I knew I may not survive, but I refused my thoughts think about dying! It was the worst experience,” Kipkorir recalled.

He said that after being discharged, the COVID-19 aftereffects had prolonged side effects on him for months.

It was at this time that he reflected that life passes and everything a person owns just evaporates like smoke, so he decided that he would not continue to spend so much of his time at work seeking wealth that he would leave behind after dying.

When he returned to work the following year, Kipkorir initiated changes in his law firm and required everyone to work from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and spend the rest of the time with their families and taking care of their health.

“When I resumed work in May 2021, I made up my mind that henceforth, my staff and I will work from 8 am to 2 pm, Monday-Friday, forever! We are the only business in Kenya, if not the whole world, that stops work at 2 pm,” he boasted.

“My solitary stay in AKUH allowed me to reflect on life, vanity of riches, love of family, loyalty of few BFFs & duplicity of many others!” he added.

The wealthy lawyer revealed to friends and acquaintances that they should not be suspicious when they see him enjoying drinks at a restaurant in the evenings past 2 p.m., because now they should know that this is his after-work time.

Kipkorir also urged people to have time to enjoy themselves instead of spending most of their time chasing after money and wealth, because whatever that was meant for you will be yours in due time without even chasing for it.

“When you see me breaking bread or taking wine every afternoon, rest assured, I have done my work for the day! It was also then that I decided I would never hunger for material possessions or money, or love. Our lives are written in the stars. What is ours will always be,” Kipkorir signed out.

The coronavirus was confirmed to have reached Kenya on 12 March 2020, with the initial cases reported in the capital city, Nairobi, and in the coastal area, Mombasa.
