Kenyan motivational speaker and pastor Robert Burale feels that Kenya is a nation where a large percentage of its youth are depressed.

Burale made his feelings clear during a discussion on the effects of gambling on the Elevate program on NTV.

According to the pastor who is also a book author, a large number of Kenyans currently own digital devices like phones on which they spend most of their time engaging in gossip, gambling, and watching adult content, which he feels has plunged many into the depths of depression.

Burale said that technology is good for development, but for Kenyans, they have misused it, giving an example that in developed countries, young people are the chief executive officers of their companies, while in Kenya, adults up to the age of 50 have been glued to gossip.

“When I was growing up, we only had VOK, which could start at 10 am and by midnight it’s off. But as of today, everybody has a TV on their hands. 3 things keep them glued to the gadgets: gossip, betting, and adult content. And then someone is telling these young people that they’re preparing them for the nations? No nations, let’s be honest, in China, there’s a 25-year-old CEO, but in Kenya, we have 50-year-old gossip bloggers,” Burale said.

Burale gave an example of how you can spot someone who is going through the effects of depression without even asking them, claiming that such people are very negative on social media and do not see the good in anything.

“We are looking at the most depressed nation right now. How do we know that we’re depressed? Post something about your success right now, 90% will insult you. Post that you’ve got a man you want to get married to, then you’ll know you have no friends. It’s the national mood, and it’s because someone has not kept a promise.” He said.

“These young people are just walking while depressed, I mean they’re looking for the next rope to hang themselves,” he added.

Burale claimed that social media in the country is being used inappropriately by a large number of influential people who are promoting things that are not productive for society, saying, “People who promote sin have the most followers.”
