Content creator and media personality Oga Obinna has spoken out about his contribution to the rise of Isaac Otesa Wekesa, popularly known as the Goliath of Bungoma.

During an interview on TV47 with Dr. Ofweneke, Obinna firmly stated that he was instrumental in helping Otesa gain national recognition.

“If he didn’t come for my show, he probably might not have gotten to where he is now,” Obinna said. “Because what we had in that conversation is what pushed him to work harder, re-invent himself, and become better.”

Obinna was the first to host Otesa on The Obinna Show shortly after the young man went viral during the Gen Z protests.

The interview, which aired about four months ago, offered Otesa a platform to share his background and struggles, helping the public better understand the man behind the viral fame.

Reflecting on his own journey, Obinna drew parallels between his past rejections and the opportunity he extended to Goliath of Bungoma. He noted that being fired and rejected shaped who he is today.

“I have been fired in a couple of places. If I hadn’t been rejected, I would not be Obinna because I would have been comfortable,” he shared. “If my dad hadn’t chased me away from home those many years ago, I would probably be a teacher or a pastor now. Sometimes it’s not rejection—it’s redirection.”

Obinna also addressed speculation that he harboured ill intent towards Goliath, denying claims that he sought to dim the young man’s light.

He clarified that the mission of The Obinna Show is to uplift and empower individuals who demonstrate potential and ambition.

“Why would I stop him from getting to wherever he deserves?” he posed, adding that there is no bad blood between him and Otesa.

Despite his intentions, some viewers criticized the original interview, claiming Obinna’s questions were insensitive or even humiliating. Responding to the backlash, Obinna defended his show’s format, explaining that it's designed to be both entertaining and thought-provoking.

“People who don’t understand the format often think I’m being harsh or harassing my guests. But that’s not the case,” he said. “The show is meant to give people a platform to grow, not to tear them down.”

Obinna continues to produce The Obinna Show on his YouTube channel, releasing new episodes regularly and hosting guests from across the entertainment and public service spectrum.

In the end, Obinna remains adamant that his intentions are grounded in mentorship and growth, not competition or criticism.

“Everyone deserves a shot if they’re willing to work. Goliath wa Bungoma got his, and I’m proud of the role I played,” he concluded.
