Harry Kappa will fly Kenya’s flag at the Red Bull Wings Cup global finals in Miami, United States, in January 2027 after being crowned national champion at the competition's finals held in Nairobi on Saturday.
The 21-year-old secured his place on the global stage after overcoming Prorate 2-0 in the national final staged at Century Cinemax, Sarit Centre, earning the right to compete against some of the world's best esports players.
Kappa, who competed in the Open League, will now be among 80 finalists representing different countries at the three-day global showdown featuring the EA SPORTS FC 27 competition.
The national championships brought together players from the University and Open leagues, with the best performers progressing through knockout rounds to determine Kenya's representative.
The University League offered students from institutions across the country an opportunity to showcase their gaming skills, while the Open League attracted esports enthusiasts from different parts of the country.
Players battled through home-and-away knockout matches, with aggregate scores determining who advanced before the leading contenders converged for the national finals.
Kappa will now turn his attention to Miami, where the global competition will combine virtual football battles with real-life football challenges at Inter Miami's Nu Stadium.
The three-day event will begin with tournament activities before the group-stage matches and qualifiers take centre stage on the second day, alongside the real-life football challenges. The competition will then culminate in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and grand final on the final day.
Kappa is already relishing the opportunity to test himself against the world's finest, promising to make the most of the time available to prepare for the global assignment.
“Winning the national final is a major milestone, but the bigger challenge lies ahead. Representing Kenya on the global stage is a responsibility I take seriously. I know I will be competing against some of the best players in the world, so I intend to use the time before the tournament to sharpen my skills, study different playing styles and prepare for the competition,” Kappa said.
“My ambition is not just to participate, but to progress to the final stages and give Kenya something to celebrate.”
Red Bull athlete Patrick Odongo hailed Kappa's triumph, noting that competitions such as the Wings Cup provide young gamers with a platform to showcase their talent and pursue opportunities beyond the local scene.
“Competitions such as the Red Bull Wings Cup give young people an opportunity to test their abilities, compete at different levels and pursue their ambitions beyond the local scene."
“Kappa's win is an important achievement, and we wish him all the best as he flies Kenya's flag in Miami,” said Odongo.
He added that competitive gaming was increasingly establishing itself as part of the wider sports landscape, demanding discipline, preparation, strategy and the ability to perform under pressure.
