At least two people have died after a navy blue Toyota Mark X crashed near Talanta Stadium along Ngong Road, with angry boda boda riders reportedly setting the vehicle on fire.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control, crossed the road and mounted the pavement near Kenol Stage, where passengers were waiting for public transport.

The vehicle reportedly crashed into an embankment, killing a woman who was waiting for a matatu heading to Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) and a passenger who was seated in the front of the car.

Two other passengers travelling in the back seat sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment, while the driver reportedly survived the crash.

Eyewitness accounts alleged that the driver may have been intoxicated at the time of the accident. However, the claims had not been independently verified, and the circumstances surrounding the crash remained unclear.

Police said they are investigating the incident, as they discourage mob injustice. The National Police Service said it wants suspects to be surrendered to authorities for processing.

The incident sparked anger among some boda boda riders at the scene, who reportedly set the wreckage ablaze.

Emergency responders and members of the public gathered at the scene as images of the burning vehicle circulated online.

The bodies of the two victims were taken to City Mortuary.
