Teso North MP Oku Kaunya says an investor is interested in establishing an industrial park in the constituency, a project he says could create more than 6,000 jobs.
Kaunya said the investor requires 50 acres of land, with the location of the proposed park depending on land availability.
He said the project would create employment opportunities for residents, particularly young people, and help address unemployment in the constituency.
“Teso North will not be the same once the park is up and running, as it will substantially address the problem of unemployment among young people,” he said.
Kaunya, who is also the Teso community spokesman, spoke at Keng’atuny Comprehensive School in Malaba South ward.
He said the industrial park would attract investors, increase revenue and support various value chains in the regional economy.
Kaunya said the proposed project, alongside the Malaba Export Processing Zone and the Nasewa Export Processing Zone in Matayos, could transform Busia County’s economy.
The MP also announced that the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) Board had agreed to purchase a school bus worth Sh9.7 million for St Stephen Keng’atuny Secondary School under its corporate social responsibility programme.
He added that a bus for Katanyu would also be delivered by December.
Busia County Assembly Deputy Speaker Ronald Ochalu commended Kaunya for supporting students but said the constituency continued to face a serious shortage of employment opportunities.
“As Teso spokesperson, talk to President William Ruto and other like-minded leaders and secure job opportunities for our youth,” Ochalu urged.
Ochalu also cautioned Kaunya against leaving the ODM, saying the party remained significant despite the departure or reduced involvement of some prominent members.
