A lobby group campaigning for President William Ruto's reelection across Western region says it is mobilising support right from polling stations.
The Magharibi Movement that was launched by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi in August says it is establishing structures for the four Western region counties before cascading them to the constituency, ward and polling station levels.
Lobby treasurer Tony Maleche said the campaign by the group aims to take Ruto's re-election message to the grassroots with the aim of debunking misinforming and disinformation by the opposition.
Maleche said the movement will mirror the Youth for Kanu (WK92) that marshalled President Daniel Moi's reelection in 1997.
Ruto was a member of the YK92 outfit.
“We want the President to win a majority of the 37 parliamentary seats in Western. We don’t want the President to suffer the same fate Mwai Kibaki suffered in 2007 by lacking numbers in Parliament,” Maleche said.
Secretary Isaac Otiende said the group seeks to recoup former members of the defunct ANC party that dissolved to join UDA and give them hope that there’s life after ANC since they have been living in denial that the party is no more.
“It’s a voice for the voiceless away from the usual political hullabaloo. We are to exert pressure on our leaders to see the importance of the people being part and parcel of stare appointments and other goodies and not just voting,” he said.
He the group seeks to work with the Kenya Kwanza government in articulating its ideals and policies that affect the region directly.
He said the group seeks to push for the region to speak in none voice on matters that affect the region.
“The movement has traversed all constituencies in Kakamega and held meetings with various stakeholders,” he said.
