Kenya’s Junior Baseball5 team will carry an unbeaten regional championship record and convincing victories from Botswana into the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games.
They will seek to convert their growing international experience into a medal finish.
The team strengthened its credentials with victories over Lesotho and hosts Botswana at the South African Region World Cup, giving head coach Joel Wangichu encouraging evidence of the squad’s readiness ahead of the October 30 start of competition in Senegal.
Kenya opened its Botswana campaign with a straight-sets victory over Lesotho, winning 26–2 in the first set before completing the sweep with a 9–0 result. The youngsters followed that performance with a 19–0 victory against Botswana.
“They played well despite coming directly from their respective schools. They had both determination and fire. We hope they maintain the momentum when we go to Dakar,” Wangichu said.
The results build on Kenya’s regional success in June, when the juniors won the East African Baseball5 title in Kampala with an unbeaten run, defeating hosts Uganda 11–0 and 8–1 in the final to reclaim the crown. That victory also secured Kenya’s place at the African Baseball5 Championship.
Baseball5 Kenya Federation secretary-general Patrick Dunda said the Botswana tournament had provided valuable preparation for the Olympic assignment.
“This tournament is a good build-up ahead of the Dakar Games,” Dunda said.
Kenya’s challenge in Dakar, however, will be different from its regional and preparatory outings. The team has been drawn in Group B alongside France, Mexico and Syria, while Group A comprises defending youth world champions Cuba, Chinese Taipei, Turkey and hosts Senegal.
France, ranked third in the world, and Mexico, ranked fifth, will provide significant tests for Kenya, which was ranked 10th in the world in the September competition build-up. The group-stage campaign will therefore offer a measure of how far the East African champions have progressed against established international opposition.
Kenya’s opening match against France is scheduled for October 30, followed by Syria on October 31 and Mexico on November 1, according to the French Baseball and Softball Federation’s published fixture schedule. The top team in each group will advance directly to the semi-finals, while the second- and third-placed teams will contest the quarter-finals for the remaining semi-final places.
The Baseball5 competition runs from October 30 to November 3 at the Complexe Tour de l’Œuf in Dakar. It will mark the discipline’s first appearance at the Youth Olympic Games, with eight nations competing for the inaugural Olympic Baseball5 medals.
Kenya and hosts Senegal will represent Africa in the competition, which also features teams from Europe, Asia and the Americas. The tournament offers the Kenyan youngsters an opportunity to test themselves against international opposition while raising the profile of a discipline designed around speed, agility, coordination and teamwork.
Before travelling to Senegal, the Kenyan squad is expected to attend a residential training camp in Mombasa (climatic conditions are considered similar to those in Dakar), where the technical bench will work on team cohesion and final preparations.
Dakar 2026 will be the first Youth Olympic Games hosted on African soil, with the wider event scheduled for October 31 to November 13.
