President William Ruto on October 20, 2025.

President William Ruto has commended Kenya’s creative sector for using technology and innovation to build economic opportunities, as the nation marks Mashujaa Day.

The celebrations are taking place at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret City, which is fully set up for the national holiday co-hosted by Uasin Gishu, Nandi, and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.

President Ruto will preside over the event.

In a tweet on Tuesday, the President connected the country's historic struggle for freedom directly with current efforts toward economic self-reliance.

"Our heroes fought for freedom. Today's generation is using creativity, innovation and technology to unlock economic freedom," the President said

"To every Kenyan building a future through the creative economy, we celebrate you."

Mashujaa Day, also known as Heroes' Day—where "mashujaa" is Swahili for "heroes"—is a national celebration observed annually on October 20.

Initially known as Kenyatta Day, the holiday was established to commemorate the detention of key leaders in the fight for independence in 1952.

It was later renamed Mashujaa Day following the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya.

The day was enacted to honour all national heroes, expanding its focus beyond just those who fought for independence to recognise all individuals who have made notable contributions.

The theme for 2026 is “Security, Sports and the Finance Sector (The Economy)”.

Overall, it remains a significant day for Kenyans to honour the heroes who have shaped the nation's past and present.

This year's event continues the government's policy of rotating national holiday celebrations across counties.

Last year, in 2025, the national Mashujaa Day celebrations were hosted at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.
