A section of Kiambu UDA-allied MPs has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of radicalising the Mt Kenya region through his “one term” campaign against President William Ruto.
The leaders have since called on residents to reject political rhetoric and support the government’s development agenda ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Juja MP George Koimburi said residents should think independently before following political leaders, arguing that Gachagua’s calls to deny Ruto a second term were not necessarily aligned with the region’s interests.
Speaking during a meeting with clergy at Gatundu Garden last week, Koimburi challenged residents to question political messages and assess whether those promoting them had a clear vision for the community.
“We have been held captive by Gachagua. He is just saying one term and we as people, we are just following his script knowing very well that Gachagua himself can’t vie for presidency, we need to follow leaders with a vision,” Koimburi said.
The legislator urged Mt Kenya residents to stop what he described as political radicalisation and make decisions based on their interests rather than blindly following influential politicians.
He also called on the clergy to support the government, citing its development record and urging religious leaders to encourage constructive engagement with the administration.
Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has similarly called on Mt Kenya leaders to unite and stop engaging in political rhetoric targeting Ruto’s administration.
Kabogo argued that calls for a one-term presidency were not advancing the interests of the region, urging politicians to support the Kenya Kwanza government.
“Don't listen to petty politicians, we must unite,” Kabogo said, warning against divisions within Mt Kenya.
“We will support this government no matter what, we will not follow those people. I will support Deputy President Kindiki and we move forward,” he added.
Kiambu Woman Representative Anne Wamuratha has also urged residents to rally behind the administration, saying cooperation with the government was important for the region’s development.
Speaking at a recent event attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Wamuratha said residents would not follow leaders she accused of misleading the community while pursuing personal interests.
“We will fully rally behind the Kenya Kwanza administration led by President William Ruto and his deputy Kithure Kindiki,” she said.
Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a, who also attended the event, said residents were aware of development projects launched by the government and would not be swayed by opposition politics.
“We will rally behind this administration and we are fully behind President William Ruto and his deputy Kithure Kindiki,” she said.
