President William Ruto flags off Sh1.84bn Konyao-Kiwawa road upgrade in Elgeyo Marakwet/PCS

President William Ruto has announced fresh investments in road infrastructure and electricity connectivity in West Pokot County, including a Sh1.84 billion road upgrade and Sh1 billion for last-mile electricity connections in Kacheliba Constituency.

Ruto launched the projects during a tour of the county on Wednesday, accompanied by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and other leaders and government officials.

At Konyao, the President flagged off the first Sh100 million phase of a road project, describing the investment as part of his administration’s commitment to equitable development.

"At Konyao in the constituency, [I] flagged off the first Sh100 million phase, demonstrating our commitment to equitable development and ensuring no region is left behind," Ruto said.

The President also announced a Sh1 billion investment in last-mile electricity connectivity in Kacheliba Constituency, saying the allocation was intended to address longstanding gaps in access to power.

"To address longstanding failure to expand access to electricity in Kacheliba Constituency, West Pokot County, we are investing KSh1 billion in last-mile connectivity, the largest allocation to a single constituency in Kenya," he said.

Ruto also flagged off the Sh1.84 billion upgrade of the Konyao-Kiwawa section of the Lodwar-Lorugum-Lorengippi-Loya road.

The road project is expected to improve connectivity along the corridor, ease the movement of people and goods and strengthen links between communities and markets.

The investments target key infrastructure needs in the county, with road improvements expected to support transport and trade while expanded electricity connectivity could improve access to power for households and businesses.

Ruto's tour also included a public rally where he addressed residents alongside local leaders.

The projects form part of the government's development agenda, with the President emphasising equitable distribution of resources and the need to extend infrastructure investment to areas that have experienced longstanding service gaps.
