Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif flags off new solid waste management equipment for Mandera Municipality /HANDOUTThe Mandera County Government has donated Sh3.5 million to traders affected by a fire at Bus Park Market in Mandera Town, as Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif pledged to pursue the reconstruction of the market.
The fire, which occurred on September 22, disrupted businesses and left traders counting losses, prompting the county government to offer financial support to help them recover.
Khalif, accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr Ali Mohamud, met the affected traders to assess the impact of the incident and discuss measures to support their recovery.
The governor said the county would work with the National Government to reconstruct the affected market and enable traders to resume normal business operations.
“We will work closely with the National Government to reconstruct the market and help traders rebuild their businesses and restore their livelihoods,” Khalif said.
The Sh3.5 million donation is intended to cushion the affected traders as they seek to recover from the losses caused by the fire.
However, details on how the funds will be distributed among the affected traders, as well as the timeline for reconstruction, were not provided.
The proposed reconstruction is expected to provide a pathway towards restoring trading activities at the market, which serves businesses and residents in Mandera Town.

In a separate development, Khalif presided over the commissioning of new solid waste management equipment for Mandera Municipality.
The equipment is intended to strengthen waste collection, improve operational efficiency and enhance sanitation services within the municipality.
The initiative is part of the county government's efforts to improve municipal service delivery and maintain cleaner public spaces.
The county government reaffirmed that it is focused on supporting traders affected by the market fire while investing in services aimed at improving the urban environment.
The reconstruction pledge, however, will require coordination between the county and National Government to determine the scope of the works, funding arrangements and implementation timelines.
