Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna with Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has met Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina and Senator Kamau Murango as opposition leaders step up efforts to unite ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna, who leads the Linda Mwananchi movement, disclosed the meeting in a post on X, saying the leaders had visited his office to discuss ways of uniting the country and strengthening the opposition.
“Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina and Senator Kamau Murango are solid people. But you already knew that. They stopped by the office today to share thoughts on what we must do to unite the country and especially the opposition, for us to return our nation to democratic governance in 2027,” Sifuna wrote.
He concluded the post with the phrase “Mbele kuzuri”, signalling optimism about the discussions, although he did not disclose any specific agreements reached during the meeting.
The engagement comes amid growing calls for opposition leaders to consolidate their political support and agree on a common candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Maina has previously urged opposition figures, including Sifuna, Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa, to set aside personal ambitions and work towards a united front.
“The Kenyan citizens have spoken. They want us to stop infighting. Our enemy is common, and all we want is one candidate to face him in 2027,” Maina said at a recent political rally.
Murango has also publicly defended Sifuna and other opposition figures amid political disagreements, positioning himself as a supporter of cooperation across political divides.
The meeting brings together leaders from Nairobi and Mount Kenya at a time when discussions over opposition unity and potential political alliances are gaining attention ahead of the next election.
However, neither Sifuna nor Maina has publicly announced an agreement to run together in 2027.
The meeting also does not, on its own, establish whether discussions included possible presidential or deputy presidential nominations.
The extent to which the engagement will contribute to a broader opposition coalition remains unclear as political leaders continue to explore avenues for cooperation ahead of the 2027 polls.
