A Tanzanian national died after a mining shaft collapsed in Mikei Location, Nyatike Sub-County, Migori County.

The incident was reported on October 6, police said.

Police officers who visited the scene found the body of the deceased, identified as Ernest Benard Bwana, which had already been retrieved from the collapsed shaft.

Preliminary investigations established that nine miners were working inside the shaft when it suddenly collapsed.

Bwana was the only miner injured in the incident. The other eight miners managed to escape unharmed, police said.

The scene was processed by police officers, while Bwana's body, which had visible injuries, was moved to Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

The incident comes amid efforts to improve safety at mining sites.

Last week, a similar incident in a shaft in West Pokot left five people dead.

Another incident was reported in the area on Tuesday, leaving four miners dead. The bodies were later moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.

The government has been running campaigns to address safety concerns in the mining sector.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has been leading campaigns on safe mining of minerals in several parts of the country.

Police said most of the deaths are under investigation, while others have been resolved.

A special police squad has also been created to focus on the mining sector.

The team has raised concerns about interference with its work as it seeks to enforce the law.
