The National Liberal Party (NLP) leader Dr Augustus Kyalo Muli when he unveiled Andrew Kaleli as its candidate for the Migwani Ward by-election slated forNovember 17, 2026/HANDOUTThe National Liberal Party (NLP) has formally entered the Migwani Ward MCA race, unveiling Andrew Kaleli as its candidate for the November 17, 2026, by-election.
Party leader Dr Augustus Kyalo Muli launched Kaleli’s candidature in Mwingi West, setting the stage for a contest expected to pit the NLP against candidates from the Wiper Democratic Movement, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the National Economic Development Party (NEDP), associated with former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
Muli used the occasion to warn political parties against importing violence into Ukambani, urging the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and security agencies to remain vigilant throughout the campaign and voting period.
“We have seen violence in almost every by-election held in this country recently. Goons being imported, voters being intimidated. We will not allow that in Ukambani. IEBC must be vigilant and ensure Migwani remains peaceful,” Muli said.
He also urged residents to be alert to groups of outsiders allegedly being brought into the area to disrupt the campaigns.
“I am calling on the people of Migwani to be watchful. Look out for foreigners who are brought here to bring violence to our peaceful region. If you see people you don’t know being ferried to cause chaos, report them. This election must be decided by the people of Migwani, not by imported goons,” he said.
The National Liberal Party (NLP) supporters and members gathered for the unveiling of Andrew Kaleli as the candidate for the Migwani Ward by-election slated for November 17, 2026/HANDOUTMuli said the campaign should be centred on ideas, development and the interests of residents rather than intimidation and political violence.
He described Kaleli’s candidature as part of the NLP’s broader strategy to expand its grassroots presence in Ukambani and challenge established political parties ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The party leader said NLP was positioning itself as an alternative political vehicle for residents of the region and would continue unveiling candidates for various elective positions as it builds its political network.
Muli, who serves as patron of the Anzauni clan, also appealed to members of the community to support Kaleli’s bid.
“The Anzauni are my people and they are the majority here in Mwingi West. When the clan speaks, our people listen. I am counting on my community to walk this journey with Andrew Kaleli,” he said.
He nevertheless urged supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and respect the right of voters to make their choices freely.
The Migwani Ward contest is shaping up as an early test of the NLP’s ability to establish itself in a region where Wiper has traditionally enjoyed considerable political influence, while UDA has been seeking to expand its support base in Ukambani.
The Migwani Ward seat fell vacant after former MCA Harrison Maluki Mawia was appointed Clerk of the Kitui County Assembly on August 6, 2026.
The IEBC subsequently gazetted Tuesday, November 17, 2026, as the date for the by-election, setting the stage for the parties to battle for control of the ward.
