Kenya has confirmed its first-ever imported case of Ebola. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced the discovery during a national health briefing in Nairobi.
The patient was a Kenyan citizen who had resided in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the past seven years. He fell ill roughly a month ago and sought medical care before travelling home.
"The Ministry of Health wishes to inform members of the public that it has confirmed the first imported case of Ebola,” CS Aden Duale confirmed.

The patient travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda before reaching Kenya. Upon arrival, he was admitted to a hospital in Nairobi. Despite medical attention, he passed away.
Official reports confirm that the case was detected in Nairobi, where the patient was hospitalised and treated. Emergency containment measures were triggered as soon as laboratory tests confirmed the virus.
Intensive Contact Tracing Underway
Health authorities moved quickly to trace anyone who came into contact with the patient. Isolation protocols were activated to prevent potential community spread.
"So far we have listed 28 contacts of the deceased including family members and healthcare workers who attended to the deceased,” Duale revealed.
Medical teams are also tracking 23 passengers and four crew members who shared the same flight with the patient. Designated quarantine facilities are prepared and ready to accommodate individuals at risk.
Surveillance and Public Safety Advice
Kenya has maintained a heightened level of epidemic alertness since May 2026. Laboratory testing is supported by mobile facilities deployed at border crossings in Busia and Bungoma counties, alongside central laboratories in Nairobi and Kisumu.
The World Health Organisation has been formally notified of the case, with international representatives attending the official briefing.
"The public is urged to continue with frequent hand washing or use of alcoholic hand rubs and avoid close contact with sick people."
Citizens feeling unwell are advised to visit recognised health facilities immediately. Members of the public can access verified updates and report suspected cases through the official toll-free hotline on 719.
