President William Ruto has overseen the issuance of about 5000 title deeds to residents of Mombasa County as he continued his development tour of the Coast region.

The move is aimed at addressing longstanding land ownership challenges in the region.

Ruto presided over the handover ceremony at Mama Ngina Drive Grounds in Mombasa, where residents received title deeds under the government’s land titling programme.

About 5,000 title deeds were earmarked for beneficiaries in Mombasa County.

The President was accompanied by Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome and other government officials during the ceremony.

Ruto said the issuance of the title deeds formed part of efforts to address longstanding land ownership problems that have affected residents of the Coast for decades.

“I am very proud that we will have issued 300,000 title deeds by tomorrow (Saturday, October 3, 2026) to benefit coastal people who for a very long time have lived as half-citizens in our independent Kenya,” Ruto said.

The President has made land ownership a major focus of his current coast tour, which covers Taita-Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Tana River and Lamu counties.

"These are part of the 300,000 title deeds we are issuing this week across the Coast region as we work to give hundreds of thousands of families the dignity and security that comes with land ownership documents," he added.

The government has said the wider programme is intended to provide formal ownership documents to residents who have lived on land for years without title deeds.
