Technopolis Development Authority has broken ground for the Alego Usonga Jitume Digital Centre of Excellence.

It marks another significant step in expanding access to digital infrastructure, skills and economic opportunities for young people across Kenya.

The groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by Kisumu Central MP Dr Joshua Odongo Oron, who represented his Alego Usonga counterpart Samuel Onunga Atandi, alongside Technopolis Development Authority leaders as part of ongoing efforts under the Jitume Digital Enablement Programme to bring technology, training and digital opportunities closer to communities.

Once complete, the Centre of Excellence will provide an enabling environment where young people can access digital infrastructure, develop relevant skills and explore opportunities within Kenya's rapidly evolving digital economy.

The centre is expected to support training and capacity development in areas aligned with the changing technology landscape, while creating pathways for young people to participate in online work, entrepreneurship, innovation and the broader digital economy.

Speaking during the groundbreaking, Oron welcomed the project as an important investment in the future of young people in Alego Usonga and the wider Siaya County.

“The establishment of this Centre of Excellence represents an important opportunity for our young people. By bringing digital infrastructure and skills development closer to them, we are opening new pathways for learning, innovation, entrepreneurship and employment. Our young people should not have to leave their communities to access the opportunities being created by the digital economy.”

The Jitume Digital Enablement Programme seeks to bridge the digital divide by providing young Kenyans with access to technology, digital skills and opportunities to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.

Through Jitume Digital Centres of Excellence and Digital Hubs, the programme is creating an ecosystem where access to technology is linked to practical skills development, innovation, entrepreneurship and digital work.

Technopolis Development Authority Chief Manager for Construction, Operation and Management, Anthony Sang said the development of Centres of Excellence across the country is intended to create stronger pathways for young Kenyans to move from digital access and skills development to innovation, entrepreneurship and employment.

“The Jitume Centres of Excellence are about creating an environment where young people can acquire relevant digital skills, innovate and translate their ideas into opportunities. Through the Alego Usoga Centre, we want to bring the infrastructure and ecosystem needed to participate in the digital economy closer to young people and communities.”

The Alego Usonga Centre will complement these efforts by providing a focal point for digital empowerment within the constituency and strengthening the digital ecosystem in Siaya County.

Since the inception of the Jitume programme in 2023, nearly 30,000 digital devices have been deployed nationally to train more than 100,000 young people, with 91,428 accessing digital jobs.
