Nominated Senator Shakila Abdalla has warned the government against misleading residents of Lamu County over the construction of the Dangote East African Oil Refinery, calling instead for transparency in the project. Speaking to journalists, Shakila said residents fear the project may never be implemented, arguing that the government could be using the promise of the refinery to seek political support ahead of the 2027 General Election. Her remarks came after planned protests at Mkununi Gardens in Kisiani, Amu, to oppose the suspension of construction activities at the refinery. The demonstrations were temporarily disrupted after police officers used teargas to disperse protesters.
