President William Ruto has held talks with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The discussions focused on Kenya-US relations, trade, security, technology and development.

Ruto said Kenya welcomed the extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which he said would strengthen trade between Africa and the United States and expand economic opportunities.

The two also discussed expanding cooperation in emerging areas, particularly artificial intelligence and its application in health, education and financial services.

Ruto said they exchanged views on the responsible governance of rapidly advancing AI technologies and explored opportunities for cooperation in critical minerals and nuclear energy.

On regional peace and security, the leaders discussed sustaining the security mission in Somalia, supporting stability in Haiti and addressing the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

The discussions on Sudan included efforts towards a ceasefire, a political settlement and continued regional engagement.
