East FM and Radio Africa are bringing the traditional South Asian social gathering to Nairobi through an event titled Mehfil Unplugged. Scheduled for Saturday, 26th September 2026, the evening combines live acoustic performances, classic Bollywood tunes, and community dancing.

What is a Mehfil?

The word mehfil originates from Arabic and Persian, translating literally to "gathering" or "assembly.” The term is deeply rooted in Urdu and Hindi language and South Asian culture.

Historically, a mehfil was a courtly evening of entertainment hosted for intimate audiences in the royal courts of the Mughal Empire and Nawabs. Rather than formal concert halls, these gatherings took place in living rooms, private salons, or open courtyards. Guests sat on floor rugs and cushions close to the performers.

Artistically, traditional mehfils centred around classical music, semi-classical genres like Ghazals and Thumris, or poetry recitations known as Mushairas.

Audience participation remains a key characteristic of any mehfil. Listeners actively interact with musicians during the performance, nodding in agreement or offering vocal praise such as "Wah! Wah!” Over time, the concept evolved into a modern social ritual for connoisseurs and friends to enjoy music and poetry together.
