South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has been booked off from public engagements due to ill health, the Presidency has said.

In a statement, the Presidency said Ramaphosa had been advised by his medical team to rest and recover.

The President returned from the BRICS Summit in India on Monday, September 14, after attending the two-day summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.

During the summit, he participated in discussions on global governance and multilateralism and addressed the India-South Africa Business Leadership Roundtable.

The Presidency said Ramaphosa had asked respective Ministers to represent him at scheduled public engagements where possible.

“President Ramaphosa, who returned from the BRICS Summit in India on Monday, has been advised by his medical team to rest and recover,” the Presidency said.

It added that the President is currently booked off from public engagements as he recuperates.

Ramaphosa first became South Africa’s president in February 2018 following the resignation of Jacob Zuma. He was re-elected by the National Assembly on June 14, 2024, and inaugurated for a second term on June 19, 2024.

The Presidency did not provide further details on Ramaphosa’s condition.
