The government plans to import 200,000 metric tonnes of industrial sugar into the country, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has told senators. However, Kagwe said local sugar farmers are producing enough cane to meet domestic demand, which may not require the issuance of import licenses. He also assured senators that the Sugar Pricing Committee remains operational despite the challenges of constituting the Kenya Sugar Board which arise from the ongoing court cases.
