The cancer burden is rising sharply, with new cases increasing by 229 per cent between 1990 and 2023, according to a study published in The Lancet Oncology. The analysis estimates 1.54 million cancer cases in 2023, alongside 923,000 deaths and nearly 34 million years of healthy life lost. Researchers warn the burden could worsen, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where access to prevention, early diagnosis and treatment remains limited.
