Kenyans on Thursday took to the streets of Nairobi for an awareness walk to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, with participants calling for greater awareness, support and hope for people experiencing mental health challenges.
The walk, held at Green Park Terminus in Nairobi, was organised under the theme "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" and brought together participants from the Ministry of Health, Nairobi City County and partner organisations.
The event included a suicide prevention awareness walk, music and dance, expressive art and speeches.
Participants walked from Green Park Terminus along Haile Selassie Avenue before joining Moi Avenue towards the Kenya National Archives, where they made a brief awareness stop.
They then continued along Kenyatta Avenue and Uhuru Highway before returning to Green Park Terminus.
Many participants wore white World Suicide Prevention Day T-shirts, while others were dressed in branded vests and tops representing participating organisations.
They carried banners and placards bearing messages including "I SEE YOU", "ONE DAY AT A TIME", "YOU ARE NOT ALONE" and "STAY THE WORLD IS BETTER WITH YOU".
Some banners also carried the message "Suicide is Not an Option: Choose Hope, Choose Life", while a Kenyan flag was raised above the crowd during the march.
World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10 each year and forms part of efforts to raise awareness about suicide prevention and encourage conversations around mental health.
September is observed as Suicide Prevention Month, providing an opportunity to increase public awareness, challenge stigma and promote support for people who may be struggling.
